Survivor : A Family Affair
In a world of desperation for entertainment society has found themselves eager to push the limits of public stimulation. As the end of the world approaches there are no boundaries, and the plotting for the final season of Survivor would be one to remember.
The council hustled into the board room ready to begin a new and exciting adventure. It was made up of 10 experienced and elite survivors of the past. Amanda Kimmel led the council, along with Bob, Sandra, Tyson, Jeff, Stephanie, Dan, Erik, Benry and Todd. Each one was known for successes that put them above the others that had fallen. It was guaranteed to be a season to end with a bang.
The public drooled with both excitement and fear of what this genius council would gift to them in a matter of days. The only thing the public would know is that this final season would be referred to as Ultimate Survivor : A Family Affair. Days would pass before the council emerged from their think tank and the next excursion was set in motion.
Hundreds of miles away a door slammed shut with incredible force waking Charlie Biggs from her usual quiet slumber. Before she could investigate the startling sounds in her city home, lights swarmed the room and shadowed figures gathered around her. A sudden ping of pain surged throughout her head and that was the last memory she would have of what she thought was her perfect life.
Her eyes fluttered open with confusion to an unfamiliar sound. The quiet murmurs of the country air were not like any noise Charlie had ever experienced in the city. Ripped from the safety of her home in the dead of night she found herself groggy and confused. With a wobble in her step she tried desperately to find her balance but plummeted to the ground instantaneously. She was now filled with fear and panic realizing she was unable to move and her eyes were blackened by a soft object that covered them. She wondered if she would survive the nightmare that started only hours before.
Charlie was only 15 years old, bright and sassy with brass balls. Defiance was her middle name and she tangoed in a relationship with the law from a young age. As she regained consciousnesses once more she realized her head was pounding but the blindfold had been removed. She started screaming with a mouth like a dirty sailor but soon realized it fell on deaf ears.
Whimpers from across the room caught Charlie's attention immediately. She knew she needed to focus her eyes and find a way out. As the dust settled she stood bracing herself on the wall. She traveled along it cautiously towards the cries radiating only a few feet away. A hand reached over grabbing Charlie by the arm sending a terrifying shiver down her spine until she realized this touch was familiar.
"Mom...," Charlie whispered as her voice shook with fear. The two had not seen each other for many years. Charlie remembered when she was 10, when her mother became very ill and mentally swooshed into a spiral. Before Daddy had passed away he had taken her to a facility to get better, and she never returned. Charlie had gone to live with her wicked step mother before running away only months later. As she flashed back she did not realize the grip on her arm was digging deep and soon two frail arms were wrapped around her body.
Jessica's voice spoke softly, "Charlie, it's me. I never thought I would see you again." Tears rushed down both girls faces forgetting for only a moment what a horrible situation they found themselves in. The embrace felt like it only lasted for seconds before the others began to wake in the same confused state as Charlie and her mother. The family reunion would have to wait as Charlie helped her mother to her feet and along the wall to continue exploring.
Charlie whispered to her mother, "I want to know everything as soon as we get out of here." Jessica did not respond but Charlie knew she felt the same way. They both wondered how many people were stuffed in this damp room, and the answer was soon to be revealed.
A light flickered abruptly above them and more familiar faces appeared. There seemed to be 12 people of all different ages, professions, and walks of life scattered within the room. Some now fully awake surveying the situation and others still in a groggy state of confusion.
The first thing everyone noticed was many objects in the middle of the padded room. It looked as if they were in an abandoned mental facility. Many tried to pry the doors open but failed one after another. Staying along the wall to get to one another seemed the safest to most, but some would not feel welcomed by embraces.
Charlie and Jessica stumbled upon Army Officer Kathryn Smith first. Her hair always golden in any light, and fearless optimism radiating as usual. This was not just any officer, it was Charlie's aunt that had been estranged for years. Soon the figure immediately behind Kathryn emerged. It was her life partner Suzy, or as most called her the Leprechaun. Kathryn has left Canada when Charlie was young to go and live in Ireland with her partner and escape the hell that was their family. There would be no escaping this family reunion.
Differences aside it was agreed the four would continue into the shadows of the walls exploring what other surprises waited. They came across a small group huddled together not speaking a word, there were two more teenagers, and an older women. Fae Biggs, Nicholas Man, and Margaret Smith all huddled together. Charlie felt her fist tighten at the sight of this group and grasped her mothers arm. Fae was her step sister, and Nicholas the boy she loved. That was until Fae and her superior stature swooped in and Charlie had been forgotten. Margaret Smith was also family, never taking sides, but always with an opinion. She held onto the two teenagers like a protective mother, though she never had children of her own. Five more people awaited rescue leaving no time for fighting just yet.
What seemed like only a few steps away stood two faces that more then just family would recognize. Many years ago they had been on television themselves but exiled by the gaming board for lack of respect and multiple rule breaking. They were known as the terrible Bellas of Survivor. Colleen Haskell and Candey Woodwood had done the unthinkable crime of defying Amanda Kimmel. They stood with arrogance and no reservations. If only they were aware of what the council had in store for them.
Without emotional connection to the latest find but extreme curiosity the group reluctantly moved forward. An empty holster and dusty badge is what was found next. Officer Angie Everly stood just in front of the last two mystery guests. Angie was a decorated officer of many years and had connections with most of the group standing before her. Soon she would fall from her untarnished record as the two final surprises revealed themselves.
A gasp of pure anger and distaste rang throughout the room. Charlie felt her mother's body instantly heat, blood boiling to extremes. Fae's mouth dropped to the ground bewildered, and only the echo of Candey and Colleens giggles bounced from the walls. Officer Angie's face screamed with blushing embarrassment, and the others stood in stone cold silence. A deep voice hesitantly spoke, " I can explain...," but they had all heard that pathological sound before. Scott Biggs stepped from behind the officer.
"You're DEAD...," Charlie bellowed finally regaining her voice, and attempting to see the final shadow waiting deep in the corner. A meek wilted women crept into the light. Trissa Marshly no longer held her beauty to par, and could feel every darting glance of anger penetrating through her body. Caught of guard she found herself thrown to the floor. Jessica had lunged from the wall tackling the women who had kept her locked away from her daughter for years. Scott quickly pulled Jessica to her feet and urged everyone to calm down.
"CALM DOWN!! I have missed out on five years of our daughters life because you two locked me away, and now your alive and well?," She panted to catch her breath this time directing her screams to the walls, "Is this some kind of sick joke? Let us out of here."
As if the rooms pleas were finally heard a loud gurgle boomed from a rusted speaker box in the corner. The room fell to silence awaiting the fate about to be dealt to them. "I am Amanda Kimmel and today you make history. You have all been selected for your unique connections to one another, and a couple of you because karma is a bitch," Candey and Colleen rolled their eyes, "Anyways... This is the newest in Survivor renovations. A less classic and predictable twist on the game everyone loves to watch. This time you get to be the game. I am sure some of you would like nothing more to bludgeon each others heads in, but that will come in time. We will be testing each of you, and not all of you will survive. Good Luck and await further instructions, and remember we will be watching you." The box squeaked one last time before going silent. The lights finally reached their full potential and the entire room was illuminated. In the middle stood a cornucopia of food, weapons, personal items, and supplies for survival.
With the whip of her long hair Candey Woodwood looked straight into the camera and mouthed some nasty profanities. Filled with cocky self entitlement she was the first to rush towards the mountain of supplies, only to be throw clear across the room by an electric shock of livid proportions. The rest of the room gasped and realized this was definitely not going to be your typical survivor game.
In a rage Colleen darted along the wall to her one and only friend. Her screams terrified the others as she found Candey charred to a crisp. Before she could engage in the same hateful profanities Candey had done only minutes before her death the little box boomed once again, "Congratulations Candey! You lived up to your full potential," a maniacal laugh slipped from Amanda's lips, "As you can see there is an electric fence of great strength in place. You will eat, and complete challenges when we decide, or you will end up like Candey. Luckily for you Colleen your fate will come a little later, so sit down, stop whimpering and enjoy the ride. Your first challenge will begin in one hour. The food portion of the force field will be deactivated for the next 10 minutes and I suggest you gather as much food as you can. You will need your fuel. Goodbye and good luck for now." Once again the only sounds coming from the room were the cries of Colleen weeping.
Quickly the group scavenged through bread, assorted bland snacks, and lots of water. No one stayed long within the middle of the room in fear the currents would return without notice. Whatever was about to happen would require great strength at least mentally and no one was showing confidence in becoming a victor.
Like predicted without warning the lights flickered off and a loud bang came from the doors followed by a frightening scream. No one dared to move. A minute later a spotlight coveted Officer Angie Everly as she was bound to an electric chair surrounded by flowing currents. The box once again filled the room with its chilling sounds. "It is time for confession," a new voice rang through the speaker, " I am Sandra and I once survived this nasty game. Each of you are here for a reason. No one is to speak unless spoken to." A brief moment of silence filled the room. "Officer Everly, you are here because your actions have impacted the lives of everyone in this room. Known as a great officer of accomplishments and decoration has been your facade for years but the guilt must be eating away at your soul. It is time to confess." The voice stopped abruptly nudging the notion that it was time for the officer to speak.
Complete shock and shame filled Angie Everly's silent face as her entire world was about to crumble. "I... I... I... I am sorry," she murmured, "I do not know where to begin." Angie cleared her throat," When I was just starting out as a young officer I was approached by an old friend. Patricia Marshly. We went to college together and there I had met the man she was having an affair with," her eyes quickly gazed at Charlie with such apologetic pleas, "Scott Biggs. I had gotten in a lot of trouble gambling in my younger days and they threatened to expose me if I did not help them. Scott wanted to leave his wife but she would take everything and he needed to disappear and keep her quiet. I helped fake his death and I helped Trissa lock Jessica up in this very facility. I am so sorry." Tears streamed down her face like a thunderstorm of chaos.
"Is that all you have Officer Everly," Sandra's voice seemed brass and unimpressed, "So be it. I will finish the story. What Angie fails to disclose is those are not the only lives she has effected. Until now you have all been silenced, but have you noticed one other is missing from your pact?," Eyes darted quickly around the room finding that the other Officer Kathryn Smith was no longer with them. A second light appeared beside Angie and she too was strapped to a chair. Sandra continued without emotion in her voice, "This time an innocent's life is at risk and one of you has the chance to set them free. Suzy do you have anything you would like to confess?" Sandra paused waiting on a response, "Silence? You have just sealed the fate of your lover. What Kathryn does not know is that before Suzy and herself got together and ran off into the Irish sunset, she was once lovers with Officer Everly. To keep Kathryn from remaining and protecting her family, she courted and stole her away. It was not love that drove Suzy to take Kathryn across the pond, it was out of protection for her real lover, Angie Everly."
The room gasped between the hysterical cries that came from Suzy huddled in the corner away from the group. The spotlight once above Kathryn shot into blackness and with one last gasp her innocence was silenced. Another loud bang mixed with a melody of terrifying screams danced around the room. A new voice came across the speaker, " Wasn't that fun?," Steph laughed with a slight cackle, "You do not follow the rules, you will be punished, and sometimes others will be punished for you. Kathryn has joined Candey in the "Dead Room" and if you do not continue to follow the rules more of you will follow. Now this would not be a game if we did not let you all have some fun as well. By random selection, Fae, you are to step forward."
Fae reluctantly did not defy the box and stepped into the light. Steph once again graced the speaker with her melodic voice," Stop shaking child, your fate is not in question, yet, but it will be soon. It is time to test your loyalty. In front of you is a box, open it now." The quiet room waited for Fae to full fill her quest. She did so quickly revealing a small pistol. Her heart sunk at the possibilities of this gift. Steph spoke again, "Inside that pistol are two bullets, and a choice. You can choose to take your secrets to the grave and end your life, or end the life of someone else's suffering. Point the gun at your head if you choose to be a coward, or you can point the gun at another offender. Choose now you have 5 minutes." The box seemed to go dead as time passed slowly.
"I choose to live.," Fae's words crackled with shaking hands as she pointed the gun towards Officer Everly, "You ruined my family, and deserve to die," She closed her eyes tightly and pulled the trigger but only an echo sang from wall to wall. Fae quickly regrouped with more determination then before as the loud bang shot across the room. Fae fell to the ground as her body went limp. Nicholas ran to her in comfort before Steph returned with terrifying news.
"Congratulations Fae you now know how it feels to steal the last breath of another. Don't be afraid some of you still have hope of surviving this night. One more bullet and Fae you will be set free but this time it must be for the one you love." Darkness filled Fae's face as she knew what Steph was implying. Nicholas looked at her with compassionate eyes understanding what was to come next. Before she could react to Steph's words, he grabbed the gun, tightly pressed against his neck and another bang filled the room.
There was no time for shock as Fae stood up covered in blood, "KILL ME, I do not want to live anymore, not without Nicholas, please, I am begging you!! KILL ME." Her face burned with tears of rage and sadness as a single bullet dropped from the roof into her lap. She quickly grabbed the gun from Nicholas still warm hands and loaded the bullet to take her own life. Her last words were burned in the others minds, "Thank You."
A deep voice now took over the speaker box, " Five executions in less then two hours impressive," Erik confidently commanded the room with his masculine voice, "The seven of you have had an exhausting day. Once we dispose of the bodies, you will be allowed to eat, and get some sleep before mornings events. Sweet Dreams." His voiced trailed off with the delusion that any dreams cast tonight would be close to sweet.
After another loud bang and bodies shuffling around the lights resumed. Blood soaked the floor where the others had fallen and they were left as only a horrible memory. The remaining seven ate cautiously and found themselves huddled back against the wall. No one spoke to one another though each filled with a million questions.
As time crept slowly the group began to fan out between the four walls. Colleen found herself isolated and beside herself still with the grief of Candey's death. Suzy continued to squeal hysterically from her own corner of torture. Off on the far side of the wall Scott and Trissa darted looks of defeat staring across at Charlie and Jessica sharing no interest in communicating with them. That left a pacing Margaret Smith with far more experience then all the rest racking her brain at some sort of escape. She still did not understand why she was here or what confession was buried deep within her.
The morning came quicker then it seemed as no one experienced anything close to sleep. They all woke to the room filled with bright lights, fresh food, water, and a new contraption waiting before them. Eyes darting immediately to the speaker box but it did not sound for hours.
Finally what seemed like a hungover voice began to come from the speaker. "Russian Roulette anyone?" asked Bob stumbling on his words,"I apologize for being late. In celebration of the great success of last nights ratings... well you do not need to hear the gory details," He paused to mumbled something to himself, "Before you are six slots, you will each take one and I suggest you hold on tightly," Bob grumbled taking a swig of what seemed like water, "You might be wondering why there are not seven slots. Last night one of you slithered within the shadows and Suzy was found early this morning strangled to death. Beware someone among you chose to kill without instructions. Be careful who you trust."
This revelation startled the others. Suzy had caused as much hurt as any but to choose to murder seemed despicable. There was nothing the remaining six could do now except enter the looming contraption and take their places for the next challenge. Awaiting further instructions glances of suspicion filled the room.
This time the familiar voice of Tyson brought instructions, "The floor beneath you will soon vanish and the world will begin to spin. Three of you will not survive so be prepared to say goodbye to your loved, or perhaps not so loved ones. Choices will be made but for now hold on tight and enjoy." Tyson quickly disappear as the thought of enjoying such torture was as kind as having sweet dreams. The remaining six wondered how far the council was willing to leave the final season of survivor.
The platform began to spin slowly as the floor slowly dropped revealing a brutal and cruel speared floor. For anyone that fell it would be a certain death. Charlie was definitely in the best shape of the group but worried about her mother after years of starvation and being locked up. In great physical shape Scott held on with ease determined to survive this situation and once again disappear into the abyss. Colleen and Margaret just sit in silence staring into each others eyes as Trissa was the first to show signs of fading.
Minutes passed before another voice came on the speaker. This time the sweet gentle voice of Todd. "It is tie for a choice. Some of you are looking strong and others who seem to be holding on for dear life. Would anyone be willing to sacrifice themselves for another?"
The question skipped from face to face. Jessica stared into he daughter's eyes convinced she would have no chance of going on, "I choose to sacrifice myself for my daughter, I love you Charlie, survive and never look back."
Charlie screamed but her voice was too late. Jessica fell to the ground but only before grabbing the legs of the small women beside her and dragging her down. With a simple thud both Jessica and Trissa fell quickly as blood gushed upwards towards the remaining four. "This is all your fault DAD!! You pathological crazy bastard!!" Her screams of anger were muffled by the sound of the machine coming to a stop and all those who survived could do was stare down at the dead bodies below.
"You want to be with your mother Charlie? Then go!! Jump to your death so we can survive," Scott rebutted with a sour tone. Colleen laughed as the others began to crumble under the pressure.
Margaret who had seemingly been quiet in concentration exploded with anger towards Scott Biggs. "Don't you DARE think that I will let you survive at your daughters expense. I confess I knew that you were still alive, and I took Fae under my wing to shelter her from your evil. You are a disgusting man and deserve death more then anyone here," She looked over into Charlie's swollen eyes, " I am sorry Charlie, I did NOT know about your mother, but you were so strong and Fae so lost and confused." An exchange of understanding swept between the two as Margaret slipped from her slot to join the others. Then there were three.
The floor replaced itself quickly and the remaining three were instructed to return to the wall. The lights went dark again and would be out for hours. Without a mother figure left in this world Charlie became filled with hate and anger. She wanted nothing more then to take her fathers life, but even then she did not know if she would survive. The door opened a crack as fresh light escaped into the dusty room. The players could hear traffic and thought it was their chance to escape and perhaps a mistake on the councils behalf. They had not noticed that the council did nothing by mistake.
Colleen instinctively darted for the door and lunged it open only to be taking captive and blindfolded. Scott and Charlie jumped back and grasped the wall. Soon a television screen appeared and there was Colleen in the middle of a bustling highway. She was still blindfolded and as they surveyed the screen the speaker box sang once more. "Hey, I'm Benry and it is time for my favorite game. Chicken. Colleen has committed crimes not directly effecting the others but her punishment needs to be suited just the same. Let us see if she can get back to the facility or if she will parish." Benry quickly disappear only leaving behind the echo of his chilled voice. This task was one for the councils own pleasure.
Knowing her odds were limited Colleen decided to make an attempt across the road. Her first was fowled by a screeching car sound as she fell back into the medium. Shaking off the hiccup she attempted again. This was not an ordinary highway because this was Amanda Kimmel's highway from hell. As Colleen's foot glanced the pavement and the others watched from inside a horrid noise bellowed. Colleen had been smothered by a cheese and wine truck as she painted the grill red. Charlie cringed at the site but for a brief second saw the irony in what had just happened. Colleen has been taking from this world in the manner that she defied the council. This even had been planned long before the others had died.
"Delicious," Dan commented on the situation from the speaker box.
"Ironically delicious," Jeff muttered seconds later. The two guys spoke as if they were recapping a football came and all Charlie and Scott could do was listen. The image of Colleen flying into the grill of the big truck played in a continuous loop for several minutes.
Scott spoke first to break the now shaded silence. "Charlie, we are not going to both survive. We need to do something. I know you hate me right now but..." Charlie quickly interjected with a stare so deep it silenced her father.
"It is their game and I don't want to talk to you until I have to. Shut up and think about what you have done. If you have ever had human emotions now is the time to channel them... FATHER." Her words stung but Scott knew it was true. He lacked a paternal instinct most fathers were blessed with. He really did not care about Charlie's safety, just his own survival he just was not ready to admit such a thing.
"It is time for one more choice," Amanda has returned to the speaker box. "We have had our fun and the end of this journey is now in sight. There is no more confessions, or tests. You will simply decide which one of you will walk free today. In front of you are two pieces of paper. You can either write down your name, or the name of the other. Then check Survive or Die. Do so now."
A father and daughter reunited after years and now they sit staring at one another wondering what will come of this final choice. Charlie quickly scribbles a name down on her paper and throws it back in the box. Scott sat silently mulling over the decision. Finally when he was finished he returned to the box then back to the wall.
With a quick shuffle of the lights the doors flung open. Amanda Kimmel walked into the room and gathered the box and two pieces of paper. Both Scott and Charlie sat stone quiet and scared to breath. Amanda surveyed the papers with a curious eye staring between both survivors thus far. She cleared her throat before speaking, "The world is about to end and all those watching are waiting to see how it plays out. A father who abandoned his daughter and caused a world of chaos over greed, or a daughter who is no angel, but showed great compassion in the toughest situation. It is a tough choice. I am not without compassion myself. From what is written here on two simple pieces of paper the answer is clear." Amanda stood and walked to Charlie whispering in her ear, "You are set free!!"
The doors opened wide and without a hesitation Amanda guided Charlie to the doors. She walked out with a simple glance at her father before the doors slammed shut. A sigh of relief shot across Scott's face but regrouped as the remainder of the council walked into the room.
"Scott what you do not realize is Charlie choose to set herself free by writing that she should die. The world is truly about to end and only those inside this shell will survive. You may live a long life, but you are going to live a lonely and captive life. You chose to be selfish and wish death upon your daughter to save yourself. She had so much more to offer this world but you could not see that." Amanda was interrupted by an incredible blast as the shell shook with great force.
Charlie closed her eyes and was back in her city home, snuggled between her blankets dreaming of her perfect life. Her mother in the kitchen making breakfast surrounded by her Aunt Kathryn and all those who should have been a part of her life. For the first time she had chosen her fate without reservation and lulled off into sweet dreams.
The bright explosion lit the night sky and the world ended in an instance leaving truly no survivors and the end of a season no one would ever forget.
In a world of desperation for entertainment society has found themselves eager to push the limits of public stimulation. As the end of the world approaches there are no boundaries, and the plotting for the final season of Survivor would be one to remember.
