It all started two years ago. The memories of that night, I cannot get out of my head. I am relentlessly plagued by nightmares that have been increasing ever since that fateful day. The dreams are so vivid and hauntingly real, that I wake up in the middle of the night with my heart furiously drumming in my chest.
Last spring, some friends and I, made a humongous mistake. We experimented with an Ouija board, which subsequently changed our lives forever. If we had known before ~ what we know now ~ we would never have gone anywhere near it!
My friends and I had gathered around a campfire that we had built in a nearby forest. Lex, and his friends Rob and Hunter, thought it would be fun to play around with the homemade Ouija board that he had brought.
My sister Alina, who is three years younger than I am, was also with us. In a circle, we each placed one finger lightly on the wooden planchette which was set in the centre of the board. It is believed to connect the user with the unseen world of the supernatural.
I have never been one to believe in the paranormal. I thought ghosts were tricks of the imagination. Lex took a deep breath before beginning with his questions. He could see the fear in my eyes. Alina, in her excited enthusiasm, started the nightmare as she blurted out, “If there are any spirits with us now, please let us know. Give us a sign.” I looked at the board, waiting anxiously for it to move ~ yet at the same time, I was dreading it. “Please don’t move,” I whispered repeatedly in my racing mind. Then, while everyone was waiting patiently, the planchette moved.
My first impression was that Lex had moved it. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe it. “Stop! That wasn’t funny!” I nervously shouted. Alina looked at me shaking with fear. I purposely put a smile on my ashen face. “I’m alright.” I lied. Lex continued with the next question. “What is your name?” he whispered. The planchette moved again. This time, it raced about the board pointing to one letter of the alphabet to another.
Our out-stretched arms were moving back and forth with our fingers lightly on the planchette. Alina released her hand and started to write the letters on a napkin she took from her pocket. Once she finished writing them down, she was terrified by what she read. She threw the napkin and ran into the forest. Lex lifted his finger off the planchette and picked up the dirty napkin and read out loud, “I am Fengbao.” I looked up at Lex and was scared to speak.
In the meantime, Alina continued to run frantically through the forest. Thunder clouds were rumbling in the threatening skies. The dense foliage of the trees kept the waning moonlight from lighting her way. Alina kept stumbling as she blindly ran with bare feet bloodied by broken sticks and stones. When there was a break in the trees, a lightening flash illuminated her surroundings and she saw a giant oak tree for her tired body to lean against. She suddenly felt a tingling sensation on her shoulder. Alina reached up and felt a gigantic spider climbing down her arm. Her shrill scream echoed through the woods.
Lex, Rob, Hunter and I all heard the terrified screams coming from deep in the forest. We ran towards the screaming and found my sister sobbing. She told me about the “humongous” spider that had “attacked” her. She wiped her tears and grabbed my hand to help herself up from the dirt. We all then hurriedly raced back to Alina’s and my house.
As the storm settled down, a light rain began to fall. When we arrived home, Alina sat on a rocking chair while Lex bandaged her injured feet. “We need to talk about what happened back at the camp,” I said. Alina’s tremulous voice made it hard for us to understand her. “You didn’t see or feel what I felt,” said a shivering Alina. Lex sat beside her and placed his hands affectionately over Alina’s. “What happened in that forest, Alina?” asked Lex. “Spiders.... everywhere” said Alina. Lex broke into laughter. He said that none of us had anything to fear after all. They were just bugs that scared Alina ~ not a ghost!
Alina suddenly began vigorously scratching her arms, making them red and sore. I gave her a warm towel to place on them to stop the itching. The events of the evening must have caused her skin to break out in hives.
Restlessly, I paced back and forth with all kinds of unsettling thoughts reeling through my mind. Lex walked upstairs to the bathroom next to what had once been my parents’ bedroom. The previous year, our family had moved to an apartment in New York so that we could all be together while my Dad, Bob worked on a job with a one-year contract. One night Alina and I had been playing with her friend’s Ouija game when a candle spontaneously lit up and fell onto the carpet. The next thing that I can recall is waking up in the hospital with a police officer named Erik telling me that my sister and I had survived a devastating fire, but our mother, Danielle had not. The following day, our father had met the same fate, dying from severe burns. Aunt Amanda came and got us and brought us back to our family home. Ever since then, our parents’ bedroom has never been entered.
As Lex climbed the stairs, lightning flashes lit up photographs of my parents which lined the walls of the stairwell. He gasped in horror as their faces turned into skulls. Lex’s eyes widened with fear as he raced up the last two steps. He quickly entered the bathroom, fumbled for the light switch and then promptly closed the door behind him. He rubbed his eyes, then filled the basin with warm water and began splashing his face. He began to relax with its soothing warmth.
To Lex, looks were everything. If he noticed even one small spot on his face, he wouldn’t leave the house.
After drying his face with a towel, he looked into the bathroom mirror ~ and froze. He let out a blood-curdling yell when he saw his reflection changing into a hideous form, with his hair falling out before his horrified eyes!
Rob, Hunter and I heard Lex’s scream and raced upstairs. We found Lex cowering in the bathtub with his arms over his head. He was mumbling incoherently. I gently lifted him out of the tub and walked him toward the door. As we passed the mirror he caught a glimpse of his reflection. It was normal again! There was nothing wrong with his face or his hair! With Rob and Hunter’s arms around him, he sobbed with relief and in a plaintiff voice he said, “I saw it. My hair was falling out and my face was messed. I was ugly.” I shuddered with the realization that there truly was such a thing as the paranormal.
Meanwhile, downstairs in the living room, Alina had pulled the towel off of her arms and was mortified to see bites all over them. She burst into tears and ran to the corner of the room and slumped to the floor.
When I found her there in that frightful state, I shouted out to the ‘unseen,’ “You are not welcome here! Get out of my house Fengbao!” The windows started to rattle and the front door slammed open. One of the long fireplace matches suddenly ignited and flew onto the carpet! Images of that night, when fire had claimed the lives of my parents, flashed through my mind. I was face to face with my fear ~ fire!
The carpet burst into flames and spread with a fury as a wind blew in through the open front door! I helped up Alina and yelled, “FIRE!”
Rob and Lex both came running down the stairs and the four of us quickly exited out the back door. Rain soaked our clothes as we watched Alina’s and my house burn to the ground. “Where’s Hunter?” I asked! Everyone’s worst fear had happened. The monstrous flames of Fengbao had claimed Hunter from them. I couldn’t help but to cry and feel lost in my now empty world.
In a rage I ran back to the camp, picked up the blue Ouija board and broke it in half with my bare hands. I then buried it under the smouldering ashes of the campfire. A strong gale blew up and forced me to the ground. In but an instant all was calm again. Was it over?
Two years have passed since that fateful night. Alina and I now live in an apartment together and are still haunted by nightmares. We had opened a gateway to the supernatural world. Who knows what will happen next? Strange things still occur. I never used to be a believer, but now I know what lurks out there ~ and I wish I didn’t.
